THE ACADEMY OF FILM WRITING is an international online writing academy founded in 2006 by author and award winning screenwriter Max Adams.
AFW’s mission is to provide students, through instruction, collaboration, and ongoing support, craft tools that elevate students’ writing to a competitive professional level – and to provide students with strategies that support students’ professional writing endeavors.
Our goal at AFW is not merely to rehash old formulas found in every screenwriting tome floating about since 1970.
Our goal at AFW is to provide students and workshoppers with defined usable and identifiable craft tools and business strategies that will achieve successful artistic and professional results for AFW students.
We don’t regurgitate. We create, illuminate, and initiate.
Max’s students and workshoppers have been featured on The Black List, have won three Academy Nicholl Screenwriting Fellowships, three Austin Film Festival First Place Screenwriting Awards, a Sundance Latino First Place Screenwriting Award, a Tracking Board Launch Pad First Place Screenwriting Award, an Independent Television & Film Festival Best Director Award, and a Best Screenplay Award from The California Women’s Film Festival. And that is just mentioning a few….
Many of Max’s students and workshoppers are published authors and working screenwriters today.
WHY SHOULD YOU TAKE A MAX CLASS?: There are a lot of reasons. The predominant reason is, it will make you a better writer. That’s a really good reason.
The other reason is, You are currently failing and don’t know why.
I don’t say that to be unkind. I say that to be clear. You know you are talented. You know you have drive and determination. You keep getting to that almost point —
And crashing and burning.
Maybe it is time to sign up, sign in, and find out why.
THE MOVERS & SHAKERS BEHIND AFW
MAX ADAMS: Max Adams is a screenwriter, author, mentor, writing coach, consultant and teacher. She is a graduate of the University of Utah with a degree in film, a produced screenwriter and playwright, a published fiction writer and journalist, and a produced writer for radio.
Recipient early in her career of an Academy Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting, an Austin Film Festival Screenwriting Award, and an America’s Best Screenwriting Award, Max was dubbed “Red Hot Adams” by Daily Variety for selling three pitches over a Christmas holiday.
Max’s produced feature films include Excess Baggage, The Ladykillers, and One For the Money. She has worked on concepts and pitches with industry movers and shakers including producers Robert Evans (The Godfather), Gale Anne Hurd (The Terminator), David Valdes (The Green Mile) and Wendy Finerman (Forest Gump, The Devil Wears Prada).
Max is the author of The New Screenwriter’s Survival Guide, is a former WGA online mentor, is the founder of two international online screenwriting workshops, is a satellite instructor for Gotham Writers, New York, and University of Utah, Salt Lake City Utah, and is the founder of and mover and shaker behind The Academy of Film Writing.
CRIS YOUNG: Where Max Adams is the inspiration and founding force behind AFW? Chris Yeong is the bedrock.
Cris lives in Suzhou City, China, and is Max’s second in command running and operating AFW workshops, websites, forums, and classes.
Without Cris, The New Screenwriter’s Survival Guide would never have seen release, seeing as Max would have dropped dead in a ditch pulling 24 hour days trying alone to get that book out while trying to keep AFW running too. Thankfully, Cris was there, Max is not dead yet, and AFW and The New Screenwriter’s Survival Guide continue to flourish without death or mayhem. Yay!
When classes are opening, Cris is whom you hear from. When class weeks are turning over, Cris is whom you hear from. When classes are closing, Cris is whom you hear from. When stats in 5150 go up, Cris is whom you hear from. And. When all hell breaks loose?
Well, okay, Max is whom you hear from — but Cris is the reason why.
[Not really, you are odds on the reason why, but, be nice to Cris just in case. He does a lot of heavy lifting around here.]
